DAY 2 - HANGA ROA

Breakfast at your hotel. Departure in the morning, with your English-speaking guide, for a full day tour. The tour starts on the southern coast where you can visit some impressive, unrestored platforms, Ahu Vaihu and Ahu Akahanga. You will then continue to Rano Raraku, a quarry of almost 900 stone statues: 397 of them are still lying or standing on the slopes of the extinct volcano with its beautiful crater lake. After this stop, we will visit Ahu Tongariki (restored with 15 Moais) which is the most recent and biggest restoration project on the island. Then we will continue towards the East coast, to visit Ahu Te Pito Kura and the “Navel of the World”. Last but not least, we will stop at the beach called Anakena, with its restored Ahu Nau Nau and Ahu Ature Huke. Here, you will have some free time to enjoy the sun and the swim in the warm Pacific Ocean.

DAY 3 - HANGA ROA

Breakfast at the hotel. Departure for a half day excursion to Orongo and surroundings. We will first drive up the extinct volcano Rano Kau to have a view of the entire island, with its distinct geological features. On top of the volcano, we will go to another breathtaking lookout, with a great view over the Crater Lake. Afterwards, we will drive to the ceremonial village of Orongo, where the Birdman ritual once took place – Tangata Manu. Then we will visit the Ahu Vinapu (not restored) and the Ana Kai Tangata Cave where you will be able to appreciate some historical petroglyphs.
Return to Hanga Roa. Lunch at the hotel
In the afternoon, departure for a half-day excursion to Akivi, Tahai and surroundings. The visit starts at the archaeological site of Tahai. Here we can see a variety of ancient constructions: 3 restored Ahus and their standing moais – this is also where one can see the only statue that still has its eyes. We will also see the remains of boat-houses and a boatramp. Afterwards, we will visit the restored Ahu Akivi with its 7 Moais, built in the middle of the island. According to the legend, these 7 moais represent the first explorers that arrived in Rapa Nui, sent by the King Hotu Matua. From here we will go to the Ana Te Pahu Cave, one of the biggest lava tubes on the island, followed by the Puna Pau quarry, where the moai “hats” were once made.
Return to Hanga Roa. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
